Changing the Organization Culture

In the introduction of this book, I described how agile thought leaders are often most challenged by the idea of changing a culture. Well, now, with all the momentum from the previous three strategies executed, and the agile business realization plan in place to support the new operating model, you can finally strive to accomplish organizational culture change. You’ve tackled the process with the agile business realization plan, but now you have to take on organizational change.

However, humans have feelings and emotions that can become forces against agile business adoption and that may be a roadblock. Specifically, people may feel: 1.Marginalized, redundant, and threatened when projects are canceled. If team members consider themselves special or important, they will experience a personal loss. When making decisions to kill programs, it will be difficult to be successful unless the delivery can move high-value work to areas that have capacity. As a result, the organizational structure can bog down the product decision-making process in a tangled web of endless debates, since executives cling on to lower-value projects to support their job security. As a result, a self-preservation protectionist mentality emerges that gets executives stuck on defending their own projects to keep them going at all costs.
